Fanny Hill è uno di quei romanzi che mi mettono in difficoltà: da una parte l'ho trovato perfino divertente, mentre dall'altra ha messo a dura prova la mia sopportazione. Ma procediamo per gradi.

Fanny Hill è un classico della letteratura erotica, diciamo pure un porno del 1749: il suo autore, John Cleland, si ritrovò a scriverlo per guadagnare un po' di soldi da dare ai molti creditori che gli stavano con il fiato sul collo. E quale modo migliore di guadagnare soldi se non pubblicando un libro che avrebbe scatenato un putiferio e indotto un gran numero di persone a procurarselo?

Ovviamente Fanny Hill gli procurò diversi guai giudiziari, dai quali però seppe abilmente uscire, guadagnandoci pure un impiego statale. Fanny Hill venne proibito, ma immagino non vi sorprenderà sapere che continuò a infiammare l'immaginazione di molti tramite una buona diffusione sottobanco.

Cosa mi è piaciuto di Fanny Hill? Be', innanzi tutto, per essere stato scritto nel 1749, l'ho trovato molto esplicito. Non aspettatevi allusioni o detti-non-detti: le scene di sesso sono molto esplicite. Molto più di quelle di E.L. James, se volete saperlo, perché contengono una naturalezza e una curiosità fanciullesca nei confronti dei piaceri derivanti dall'atto sessuale in grado di far arrossire alla grande Mr. Accigliato Grey.

Poi, sempre perché scritto nel 1749, contiene delle espressioni che mi hanno fatto morire dal ridere, come “iniezione balsamica” per sperma e “filetto di carne bianca di vitello” per “pene”.

Il fatto che sia stato scritto nel 1749 ci permette anche di lanciare uno sguardo alla condizione delle donne di piacere (o donne pubbliche, come sono chiamate nel romanzo), che rischiavano malattie, sfruttamento e problemi con la legge, ma potevano anche essere fortunate e riuscire a farsi mantenere da qualche abbiente signore. O molto fortunate se riuscivano a farsi sposare da qualche cliente innamorato.

Cosa non mi è piaciuto di Fanny Hill quindi? Forse è stupido visto che parliamo di un romanzo porno scritto nel 1749 (sì, lo so, vi sto facendo venire la nausea ripetendolo continuamente) e Olympe de Gouges avrebbe scritto il suo Dichiarazione dei diritti della donna e della cittadina solo nel 1791, ma non ho potuto fare a meno di essere infastidita da alcuni passaggi particolarmente maschilisti.

Sono rimasta, per esempio molto infastidita dalla visione penecentrica (o forse dovrei dire penegrossocentrica) di Fanny: quelli belli e buoni sono forniti di prodigiose mazze da baseball, mentre gli stronzi viscidi hanno delle insoddisfacenti penne a sfera BIC. Oppure vogliamo parlare di quest'attenzione morbosa nei confronti della verginità femminile? Oppure di quando Fanny ha provato repulsione di fronte al sesso tra due uomini, andando poi a denunciarli per i loro atti “contro natura”?

Insomma, ce n'è abbastanza per farvi urlare dalla frustrazione. Fanny Hill è un romanzo in bilico tra la modernità e il vecchio: c'è del buono che sa ancora sorprenderci e farci riflettere, ma c'è anche del brutto che, se non ci fa incazzare, di certo ci lascia molto perplessi. ( )

John Cleland’s 1748 novel Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure tells the story of a young woman who traveled from Lancashire to London seeking work as a domestic, but instead was lured into a brothel. Cleland writes the story from the perspective of Fanny, who is writing in the form of a letter. Amid her erotic encounters, she meets a man named Charles who convinces her to escape. She becomes the kept woman of a wealthy man, but finds that he’s having an affair with his maid, so she has an affair with his footman as revenge. He catches her and she must return to work in a brothel, though for wealthy clients. In the second volume, she describes the various acts at the brothel, spending more time describing others’ activities. Eventually, Fanny retires and has a chance encounter with Charles, whom she marries and with whom she shares the fortune she accumulated over the years.

Cleland published the novel in order to pay his way out of debtors’ prison. Despite its success and numerous knock-off editions, Cleland was arrested and charged with “corrupting the King’s subjects,” though he was freed after renouncing the novel. It remained available in pirate editions from underground booksellers in the U.S. and U.K. from the late-eighteenth through nineteenth centuries. Only in the mid-twentieth century was the book cleared for publication in both nations as the result of court cases and changing public sentiment. Possibly aiding the revised opinions were the book’s historical significance and Cleland’s own writing style in which he eschewed “dirty words” or explicit descriptions in favor of euphemism. The work itself may be of interest to those looking to learn more about late-seventeenth-century sexual mores as well as the history of obscenity in the English-speaking world. ( )

I actually enjoyed this story more than I thought. I wasn't really sure what to expect, it's porn after all. I liked the disruptions though. Some of them read liked a regular novel and some (most the sex scenes) got overly ridiculous which made the book fun. Most of this was dated though. I'll give it slack for being one of the earliest erotica novels in English. Modern erotic novelist, such as Anaïs Nin, are better, in my opinion. ( )
