Better than most books out there, but my least favorite of the three Roxane Gay books I've read. Still, it's an easy read and there are a couple gems nestled in there. ( )
I've read a lot of Roxane Gay's writing, but this was first time I read her fiction. This is a moving collection of stories, focused on character and on place. I knew going in that I'd like her writing style, but I was particularly impressed with the descriptions.
I've had this book from several years but only now got around to reading it. In hindsight, while I should have read it sooner, I don't think I would have been able to fully appreciate it earlier. This was a fantastic collection of short stories about the Haitian experience. It's full of desperation, sadness, and pain, but also resilience and some hope for a better future.
Roxane Gay brilliantly captures several facets of Haiti and the Haitian diaspora, and has a fantastic ability to convey a lot with just a few words. ( )
