Better than most books out there, but my least favorite of the three Roxane Gay books I've read. Still, it's an easy read and there are a couple gems nestled in there. ( ) I've had this book from several years but only now got around to reading it. In hindsight, while I should have read it sooner, I don't think I would have been able to fully appreciate it earlier. This was a fantastic collection of short stories about the Haitian experience. It's full of desperation, sadness, and pain, but also resilience and some hope for a better future. Roxane Gay brilliantly captures several facets of Haiti and the Haitian diaspora, and has a fantastic ability to convey a lot with just a few words. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
Clever and haunting by turns, Ayiti explores the Haitian diaspora experience. A married couple seeking boat passage to America prepares to leave their homeland. A mother takes a foreign soldier into her home as a boarder, and into her bed. And a woman conceives a daughter on the bank of a river while fleeing a horrific massacre, a daughter who later moves to America for a new life but is perpetually haunted by the mysterious scent of blood. Wise, fanciful, and daring, Ayiti is the book that put Roxane Gay on the map and now, with two previously uncollected stories, confirms her singular vision.
