Six friends are filming their own short film for a competition when they witness a massive train wreck which accidentally releases a brutish creature into the woods near their small town. As mysterious events occur and one of their friends go missing, the others band together to find out what is going on.

Super 8 was a movie I had seen a long, long time ago, and despite not remembering it fully, there were several parts that stuck with me and I ultimately decided it was time to check it out again. In the similar style of Steven Spielberg's Amblin films (think E.T., Goonies, and other such films) and, more recently, akin to that of Stranger Things, this is a great film that is able to capture both the massive scope of the story and its smaller, more character-driven moments. Outstanding performances from all around (especially the main crop of youth actors) make for a believable action-packed romp through a story that begins as a suspenseful mystery before devolving into a wild, breakneck thriller as the truth is uncovered and the action really ratchets up. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have caught on as a "modern day classic" as much as it possibly should have, but it really stands the test of time over a decade later and definitely is a very rewatchable film. Highly recommended.

Content Concerns: There's a good bit of frenetic violence that builds up over time; initially the film begins with a more mysterious sort of feel before the truth starts to come out of what is going on in the town and the violence picks up as all sorts of decimation wreaks across the community. An older teenager gets high in one scene, jeopardizing our heroes' mission. There also is a bit of a lengthy assortment of language, much of it uttered by the kids, that pushes at least 30 total uses if I had to put a number to it, really the only negative of the film (a mix of milder language like "h-ll," "d-mn," and "-ss," to stronger examples like "b-tch," "sh-t," and one singular use of "f-ck").

Written and directed by J. J. Abrams. Produced by Steven Spielberg. How could this possibly not be a great movie? What a dumb question, there are many ways in which this could have sucked but fortunately, it does not suck. In fact, it's a great movie. The movie mostly told from the perspective of a group of junior high school kids. One of them is trying to produce a zombie movie to enter into a Super 8 movie festival. You may have to explain to your younger children what Super 8 is and why the kids didn't just make a video with their iPhones. It's 1978, an apparently more innocent time. They kids are at the small town train station (hopefully you won't have to explain trains) filming late at night. As they are rehearsing the scene, they hear a train coming. The kid director is ecstatic. "Atmosphere" he says and gets the camera rolling.

He got lot's more atmosphere than he expected as a pickup truck drives in front of the train just pass the station, resulting in a spectacular crash. The kids go running and screaming in different directions as flaming wreckage pours down around them.

The next day things start to get weird. All the town dogs disappear. People start disappearing. The engines get stolen from every car on a used-car lot. Microwave ovens get stolen from people's homes. And a massive contingent of Air Force personnel arrive to take over the wrecked train.

The kids are really good in this. Joe, played by 15-year old Joel Courtney is sweet and vulnerable as a kid still, 4 months later, trying to cope with the accidental death of his mother. Shy and nerdy, he takes the lead in trying to figure out what's going on. Alice, played by 13-year-old Elle Fanning, is also sweet. She's recruited to be the film's only female character by the kid director because he has an enormous crush on her (as apparently does every boy in the area). It's funny, that in the movie, she's supposed to be a bit older than the boys but in real life she's younger.

I highly recommend this movie. And bring the kids. There is some strong language (mostly used by the kids, so probably nothing your kids haven't heard, or probably said). Beyond some longing looks between Joe and Alice, there is no sex. The movie might be a bit intense for younger kids. ( )

Kids try to make a zombie movie while a space monster is hiding in their town.

Fun and entertaining. Unfortunately, it's a J.J. Abrams movie, and never lets you forget it. Um, J.J? Maybe next time you taunt us with your "magic box," you could put something inside it first. As far as channeling Spielberg goes, the focus there is on his corny tropes, not on his storytelling skill. And, damnit, enough with the damn lens flares already! Watching a J.J. Abrams movie, it's kind of like having him in the room, jumping up and down next to the screen pointing at it, yelling, "Hey! Look what I did there! Check it out!"
