Tinder’s happiness at having Jason back is marred by the awful nightmares his lover has. I could feel his despair as he was trying to deal with Jason’s lack of willingness to talk about what happened. Tinder’s helplessness was very realistic and, from what I know, reflects exactly what many military spouses go through when their loved ones return from wartime assignments. I loved how loyal Tinder continues to be and how understanding. As difficult as it is for Tinder, it is exactly what Jason needs most.
Jason has trouble adjusting to the fact that he is back home. Life has continued in his absence and is normal - well, as normal as it can be while the efforts to rebuild Honolulu are still going on. His reticence to share his experience with Tinder is very clear, and when he does finally open up the truth is devastating. A.J. handles the descriptions of his situation with a lot of sensitivity, but it still left me reeling.
If you like to read about history in a way that makes you feel you’re right there, if historical details fascinate you as much as the emotions of the people who were involved in those events, and if you love books with characters who are so life-like they make you think they are people you have met, you will love this novella as much as I did. I cannot wait for the next one!
