Brown Angels is a book of poems written about pictures the poet found and collected of black children. The poems often add a fictional story or element to these very much nonfictional photographs in a way that challenges the reader to look at the children as not just kids in pictures but young people with souls and lives. This truly creates a level of empathy some might have a hard time forming otherwise. ( )

One of my favorite books so far. The history and culture written and show in this book are simply a privilege to see. I like the book for two reasons. The pictures are all black and white pictures from over one hundred years ago. They all show different children and a little poem describing them. In one page of the book you have a picture of two little brother around the age of seven who work as farmers. I love how the pictures make the book come alive. The plot of this book is also great. The book starts with pictures that are over one hundred years old but ends with pictures that could be over fifty. You can clearly see the difference in clothes of the children. The poems are short but very interesting to read. The main idea of this great book is definitely learning about African American culture and how children were dressed and what they did back then. An amazing book for the children to see and read. ( )
