This is a pleasantly diverting mystery that uses the first person hard-boiled style with satisfactory results. The usual features of the unpolished diamond character loved by all; the beautiful but troubled client; the wisecracking sidekick; the ethnic color character are all here. There is an upgrade of interest with the subject matter of Egyptian antiquities and the overall sense is of satisfying predictability, with the neat resolution of all loose ends, including the love life of the protagonist, leading to the conclusion that the author was happy with the story and not concerned about holding back something for a sequel.
