This is the 8th book of the series and I think I missed out on being as invested in the characters as I should have been had I started at the beginning. A major plot point is the wedding of longmire’s daughter. The mystery at the center is good, with the obligatory twists and turns. I was a little uncomfortable with having the white male sherriff show the Native American female how it is done. I think that is why the author made her a veteran and tough. The setting in and around the reservation was interesting. Will go back to the first and try some more. ( )

(2012)Walt's daughter is about to be married in a traditional native ceremony so he and Henry are responsible for the site of the wedding. While scouting out a remote location, they witness someone falling or being pushed from the top of a cliff nearby. The woman dies but an infant she was holding survives the fall. They determine the killer was a former lover of the woman and was incensed that she had a baby by someone else. Walt & Lolo manage to catch the man in the local native center as he tries to blow it up with propane. The marriage does take place and Lolo may become a future recurring character who has caught Walt's eye.KIRKUS REVIEWIn the eighth of this excellent series (Hell is Empty, 2011, etc.), Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire finds himself out of his element, and not just because he's in Montana.More to the point, it's because he's father of the bride. Walt's beloved daughter Cady should have known better, so it's really on her that Longmire, feeling twinges of guilt and wishing he could be in two places at once, veers off to track down a killer instead of being at the alternative nuptial site as she suddenly requires. Audrey Plain Feather, recently returned from duty in Iraq, has gone off a cliff somewhere in Montana's Cheyenne Reservation. Longmire, who saw her ?walk the air,? has no doubt he's witnessed a homicide. On the other hand, the tribal chief of police has all manner of doubts, though mostly about herself and her ability to do her new job. Though she's been severely scarred by her own service in Iraq, Lolo Long is quick to spot mentor material when it crosses her path. She commandeers the visitor from Wyoming, who puts up only token resistance. Something of an odd couple at the outset, Long and Longmire pull together as the complex investigation deepens. Tough, resourceful and quietly funny, as always. No wonder Johnson's hero will debut in a new A&E TV series, Longmire, this summer.Pub Date: May 15th, 2012ISBN: 978-0-670-02351-6Page count: 320ppPublisher: VikingReview Posted Online: June 17th, 2012Kirkus Reviews Issue: July 1st, 2012

This one was great. Maybe my favorite in the series so far. Always a good sign when you hit book 8. ( )

"I took the luxury of watching the crows playing tag above our heads for a moment more, the graceful arc of their patterns intertwining in figure eights of infinity. That was probably our job here, to keep going and to do it with as much artistry and beauty as our hearts could bear." p.308 ( )

I accidentally picked up this book. When I was out shopping, I was exhausted after a long week and thought this book was The Hollow Kingdom novel. Green book with a bird on the cover, seemed legit! I picked it up, brought it home, and then realized it was NOT the book I thought it was. Regardless, I thought... Why not? The book actually sounded quite interesting. So yay for accidental book shopping!

This is the eighth novel, and apparently it inspired Longmire on Netflix! Who knew? I do wish I had read this series starting from the beginning though, because I was a bit lost.

Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire is out to solve a case on the Cheyenne Reservation. A poor woman falls off the side of a cliff with her baby in her arms. Was it suicide? Was it murder? Walt will find out!

I can't say this is my favourite mystery/crime book, but it was a great read! I had to step away from it for a little while because I needed some more positive (and not murder) in my life, but when I came back I was ready to read Longmire's story again. I will say though... the ending was SUPER weird. Does it make more sense if I read the rest of the series? Regardless, interesting read! I'm glad I expanded my horizons and picked it up.

Two out of five stars. ( )

Please distinguish between Craig Johnson's 2012 novel, As the Crow Flies (Book 8 in the "Walt Longmire" Series), and Jeffrey Archer's 1991 novel of the same title. Thank you.
