Every so often I like reading a western. Lord of the Plains is probably one of the better ones written. It takes place in that west Texas region known as the Llano Estacado, a vast, featureless plain where, In the 1870s, the Commanches have retreated in the face of expanding white settlement. One of the aspects of this novel that I enjoyed was the sense of place the author Max Crawford evokes. Also, it will have you looking up places and events in Wikiepdia or elsewhere and I enjoy that about a book. To me it almost overshadows the main characters and plot. ( )

An Indians and the Cavalry Novel, with the climax being a fine description of the battle with the Comanche at Palo Duro Canyon.
The Isbn must have been attached to a reprint as I read this book in 1986, when it was originally published. ( )
