This book is a read read for younger students. Students can relate to the monster in the story because sometimes you just don't fit in right. When the monster lost his "M" all his friends made fun of him and it provides an excellent time for a teacher to stop a reading and talk about bullying and how it makes others feel. The main idea of this book is that sometimes losing part of yourself is okay because you may find out something really cool about yourself and make some new great friends along the way. ( )

This is a wonderful book to read to elementary students. A monster looses his m (mean) and then goes by onster. He gets kicked out of the gang of bully monsters. Whenever he thinks of something mean he could do, he ends up doing something nice instead. He likes to play with children instead of scaring them. He lost popularity in his monster group, but it was replaced by acceptance from children. The central message of this book is standing up to peer pressure and how nice guys finish first. ( )

This book is about Onster, the monster who lost his mean. Onster gets teased by the other monsters so he searches for his "M." He can't find his "M" so he decides to act like a human instead. All of his human friends throw a surprise party for him and he realizes he never needed his "M" after all. I liked this book for two reasons. First, the illustrations do a great job of enhancing the story. For instance, on the first page it states that monsters dine on eyeball soup. The illustration shows a group of monsters pouring eyeball soup into their mouths. On page seven, the illustration shows Onster eating eyeball soup. Although the text did not mention eyeball soup again, the illustration helped maintain the dynamic of the story by showing it again. Second, I liked the use of language. For instance, "Boo hoo! Sigh sigh. The Onster's sad and starts to cry." The use of onomatopoeia provokes a certain voice in the reader's head. As you read the sentence, you read it with the emotion you associate it with. This allows the reader to connect with the character's feelings. The big idea is you may feel powerful when you are mean, but nothing is more rewarding than being kind to one another. ( )
