If I rated Butter just for the quality of writing, it'd be a 3 star - because of mistakes like the too-sudden emotional shifts and the over-zealous descriptions of saxophone-playing (no one picked up this book to read saxophonist name drops). And yet I have so much respect for this really unique idea. I've never encountered a single overweight, diabetic protagonist before this, and that makes me seriously ponder what topics repel us most as a society. So, I give it 4 stars, mostly because of what it made me consider, not the actual narrative. ( ) Butter is the biggest kid at school, weighing over 400 pounds. One day after getting fed up with his life, he makes a website declaring that he will broadcast his last meal live over the internet, inviting everyone to watch as he eats himself to death. When the website makes its rounds through school, Butter suddenly finds himself part of the popular crowd as kids who've never paid him any attention begin cheering him on in his suicidal plan.
Butter is an inside portrait of the effects of bullying, with a sensitive and intelligent boy as a narrator. That Butter—and how he got that nickname will break your heart—isn’t particularly honest, with himself or others, carries the story forward as well. It helps, though, that he’s honest with the readers. The teens in this book are almost all privileged white kids, but that doesn’t lessen the impact that this story has—although it does offer some solutions that are not as easily available for less-well-off children, such as top-notch medical care and therapeutic environments. That aside, though, Butter is a boy to love. He doesn’t want to be isolated and bullied, and he’s willing to pay any price to stop being the butt of the joke. AuszeichnungenBemerkenswerte Listen
