In the western sky the bright emerald banner of the Visitor descends like a portent of annihilation. On the continent of Jacuruku, the Thaumaturgs have mounted another expedition in a bid to tame the neighbouring wild jungle. Yet this is no normal wilderness. It is called Himatan, and it is said to be half of the spirit-realm and half of the earth. And it is said to be ruled by a powerful entity who some name the Queen of Witches and some a goddess- the ancient Ardata. Saeng grew up knowing only the rule of the magus Thaumaturgs - but it was the voices from that land's forgotten past that she listened to. And when her rulers launch their invasion of this jungle, those voices send her and her brother on a desperate mission. To the south, the desert tribes are united by the arrival of a foreign warleader, a veteran commander in battered ashen mail men call the Grey Ghost. This warrior leads these tribes on a raid unlike any other, deep into the heart of Thaumaturg lands. While word comes to K'azz, and mercenary company the Crimson Guard, of a contract in Jacuruku. And their employer? Could it be the goddess herself...… (mehr)

Good addition to the story of the Crimson guard. Happens in a strange place, very disconnected from the rest of the story world in many ways. ( )

Oh look, a satisfactory and legible character arc in a single malazan book! Madness! (Jatan)

jkjkjk, Nice worldbuilding. Next: Assail! ( )

"What was that all about", asked Dancer, rather irritated. "A warning? A warning about what?". Shadowthrone gave another negligent flick of his hand. "That? Oh, I just throw those out. It confuses them."
-- Blood and Bone

This book is pretty much what I expected from it. It shows us around in the world of malaz, introduces a few new characters (because the 200 we already had weren't enough), characterizes a few more gods and introduces new and interesting ways to get killed.

Now, don't mistake this rather short summary for criticism. As always, I liked the book. I'm still going to keep reading the Series. There is nothing wrong with it. This is just me getting tired of repeating the same things over and over in every Review of the malazan series books. Yes, it is complicated. Yes, it is interesting. Yes, it is a good book. No, it is not 5 stars. No, I don't know why.

I'm not burned out of the series by any stretch of the imagination, I'm just burned out of writing the same review for the 15th time. ( )
