A fun look at the pets attached to various royal courts since the Renaissance. Mostly cats and dogs are listed, although there is a chapter on (human) dwarfs. Would have been interesting to have included pets such as parrots and other birds, and horses (but then I suppose the title would not have been as punny). Historian Katharine MacDonogh offers a richly detailed historical account of court pets from the Renaissance to the present, addressing such themes as the attraction of animals among royalty, favored breeds, special treatment and abuses received by pets, animal treatment outside the palace, and the origin of various species.
