18th century Boston, where the night is mysterious and full of conjurers.

Fast paced, mysterious, and compelling - in an alternative history 18th century Boston has conjurers and mysterious murderers to go with its revolutionaries. High praise for the storytelling, despite some roughness in the writing. I was entertained from the outset and thoroughly drawn into the action, at the end I realized I had stopped noticing the writing and was only thinking about the story, which is exactly where you want to be.

The story has a likable main character, with a good balance of interesting power and human weakness. Decent sidekicks play a small role, but a good villain or two and some twists keeps things interesting.

The Dresden files is the obvious comparison - wizard solving mysteries, sticking his neck out to save others, and to his own detriment at times, and refusing to quit despite taking a beating. One of the villains is reminiscent of Marcone, And sometimes you have to cross a line to save a life... Just in an alternative past instead of an alternative present. That said, this story lacks the humorous touch that Butcher weaves in so deftly; there is some humor, but it never did the catch me by surprise laugh out loud thing that I love about Dresden.

My main complaint is that early on, descriptions and characterizations don't feel very natural; I didn't get drawn in enough to stop noticing the writing for the first third of the book. But beyond that I got past it and just enjoyed the story.

Overall, a very good story and looking forward to enjoying the rest of the series. ( )

"Original, compelling and addictive"

"Thieftaker" is not just a modern urban noir supernatural detective story dressed up in a period costume, it is driven by the events and the mindset of the period, which gives it a distinctive and intriguing flavour.

It is driven as much by character as by plot. Our hero is not an easy man but he is one you could learn to care about. The people who threaten or help him (sometimes the SAME people) have motives and emotions of their own that make them much more than plot devices.

The supernatural world is well thought through and skillfully revealed and the plot stands up as a detective/thriller story in it own right.

Jonathan Davis narrates the book with a steady voice that has exactly the right pitch and pace to get the most from this tale.

I've already ordered the next in the series and I have high hopes of it.

This gets a 4.5, rounded up to 5, from me. History and historical characters plus an underdog with a heart of some precious metal (maybe not quite gold). If I'm staying up after 3am and getting teary over events, you're doing it right. I'm eager to read more in this series. ( )
