Surviving witnesses talk about seeing things like monsters and swarms of bees. They describe sudden, overwhelming feelings of fear and rage and paranoia. When forensics gives its report, the mass delusions make more sense: It appears the bar patrons were exposed to a cocktail of chemicals and illegal drugs that could drive anyone to temporary insanity, if not kill them outright. And if Eve can't figure it out fast, it could happen again, anytime, anywhere.… (mehr)

In Death 35

Listened to audio narrated well by Susan Ericksen.

This time Eve must stop a mass murderer using a drug to cause people to become angry and murderous, he's wracking up over a hundred kills. Is it terrorism or something else. J.D. Robb will keep you guessing and wondering how on earth Eve can find the killer. Eve gets unexpected help from Summerset and just when you think Eve has it wrapped, you get tossed another curve.

While all of that is going on Eve finally concedes to talk to Dr. Mira about her nightmares, I loved the resolution.

This one starts a bit slow but once it picks up speed it doesn't stop until the end.

Twelve minutes. That’s all it took for the folks in an after-hours bar to turn maniacal and rip into each other.

More than eighty people dead.

As the body count rises, can New York Police and Security homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her team discover the cause of this sudden violence?

In this, the thirty-fifth installment of the “In Death” series, readers learn something of the Urban Wars, an event occurring before the first book in the series and often referred to but never elaborated upon . . . until now. Readers will appreciate the backstory presented here. Summerset proves to be an unexpected resource for Eve and readers will enjoy the pleasantness between the two [who generally spend most of their time tossing sarcastic remarks at each other].

As with the previous narratives, the relationships are at the heart of the series. Mira helping Eve deal with the past . . . Peabody staunchly standing by her partner’s side . . . Eve and Roarke finding a comfortable steadiness in their relationship. It’s the banter, the camaraderie, the humor that help readers see the ever-evolving relationships between these nuanced characters . . . they’re at the heart of every “In Death” story.

And, as with earlier stories, this one stands alone, but reading the previous installments helps readers understand the connections. Despite the high body count, readers will find much to appreciate here.

Highly recommended. ( )

This is a re-read for me as I had forgotten the story until I ran across it on OpenLibrary.

They met at at “Happy Hour” as young professionals do, what Macie Snyder and Travis, her boyfriend, wanted to do was to introduce her friend CiCi to her to Travis’s friend Bren. All was going well until … suddenly Macie stabbed Travis in the eye, and the entire bar rose up fighting and killing one another. 12 minutes later it was over 80 people lay dead or dying. What happened?

Dallas steps into the bar and is staggered by the carnage so begins her next case that will challenge the NYPSD homicide division, the ME and forensics. What was the cause? The lab quickly identifies that an airborne substance was released in the bar that created fear, rage, paranoia and the hysterical response.

Is it terrorism? Who is responsible? Follow along as Dallas finds the answers.

A fast-paced mystery featuring Eve Dallas and the delicious Roarke. ( )
