This fantasy story has realistic elements and is about what happens when the main character enters an alternate reality. KT is in the 8th grade. She is obsessed with softball and hopes to get a college softball scholarship. Then one day, while pitching during a championship game, she blacks out. When she wakes up, her life is totally different. Her school, family and friends are focused on "academic" competitions while physical activity (but not sports competitions) is a boring, daily exercise. No one knows or cares about sports, not even softball. Schools host math and science competitions and the winners earned trophies and are popular in school. KT has to figure out what is going on in this new reality, how she got there, and how she can get back to her own reality. She faces many conflicts with her "new" classmates, teachers, and parents who don't understand her love for softball and how much she misses playing it.
The story is written in first-person, so readers learn about KT's feelings as she experiences the strange and frustrating changes in her new reality. This story was interesting to read because I wanted to find out what was going on, just like KT wanted to know. It also was a twist on the typical middle school coming of age story, but just like those stories KT learns more than she expected from this experience.

This was an interesting alternate reality novel for young teens. What if school valued sports rather than academics? Sadly, that isn't too hard to imagine these days. ( )

This was just overall weird. The main character, Katie (KT) enters into an alternative universe where it is only academics who are revered and sport stars (elite athletes) are considered weird and useless and almost shunned. Although KT is a ball player and I love baseball, I just couldn't get into this book and I don't think kids will find it that intriguing either. I'll put it out for a while, but if it doesn't move off the shelves, it will have a limited shelf life. ( )

Imagine right in the middle of your biggest game you black out and when you wake up, your world has completely changed. ( )
