Following on the heels of The Nobody, his Vertigo graphic novel debut, writer/artist Jeff Lemire pens his very first ongoing series Sweet Tooth. A cross between Bambi and Cormac McCarthy's The Road, Sweet Tooth tells the story of Gus, a rare new breed of human/animal hybrid children, has been raised in isolation following an inexplicable pandemic that struck a decade earlier. Now, with the death of his father he's left to fend for himself . . . until he meets a hulking drifter named Jepperd who promises to help him. Jepperd and Gus set out on a post-apocalyptic journey into the devastated American landscape to find "The Preserve" a refuge for hybrids. As the mysterious Captain James Thacker and his crew man a deadly expedition, they will uncover secrets centuries old, but what does any of this have to do with Gus and Jepperd? Plus, while Jeppard, Singh and Gus make plans to head to Alaska, things start to deteriorate for the rest of the group back at the sanctuary!.… (mehr)

I have one more graphic novel to go, then Lemire can let go of the hold he has on my life.

The first part of the novel opens in Alaska in 1911 where we go back to the cause of the disease. Unfortunately I, as a reader, have to question Lemire's depiction of Inuit people. I love that he has included First Nations people in a comic -- representation for First Nations people is desperately, desperately needed but did Lemire pull from real stories?

I just have to ask these questions because I don't want to mindlessly, thoughtlessly consume comics. I think his representation of Inuit people is an excellent start, but only a stepping stone in what we could achieve in terms of inclusivity and diversity in literature and media.

Other than that, I did definitely enjoy this comic. Only Lemire would write a situation where a man gets out of a hostage situation by talking about hockey.

Man, I'll miss this series when I'm finished with it. ( )

This volume was not as strong as the others, in my opinion. I really enjoyed the first three parts but I was hoping to have more questions answered going into the final volume. I also didn't feel like we got nearly as much character development as in the other volumes. I feel like there were some missed opportunities within the Walter Fish storyline and I was disappointed by the conclusion of that arc. That being said (I feel like I should trademark this phrase as I use it nearly every. single. review. but I digress) I still enjoyed it quite a bit, particularly the beginning, and am both really looking forward to finishing this series and feeling sad that it will be over. Has to be one of the bleakest graphic novel series out there, genuinely disturbing. ( )

Some of the characters in this series are seriously messed up, but it wouldn't be much without them. Still really digging Sweet Tooth. ( )
