Kabir is one of the few Indian poets known the world over primarily because he denounced all four-flushing and humbuggery in religious observances and believed in the Formless Cosmic Absolute who governs the universe. His verses are so loaded with spirituality that a good few have found a place in the Guru Grantha Sahib, the Sikh scripture. They have been translated into English and other languages, but there is still need for 2 translation which represents all the various forms of his poetry Sakhis (slokas), Ramainis, padas and those of them which are included in the Guru Grantha Sahib. This is the author's objective in the book. Besides, there is a great deal of difference between scholars and critics about Kabir, Some eulogise him, Others even deny that the was a poet. Western writers underplay his Vaisnava (Hindi) trend, and most overlook the quite some contradictions in his views and ideals. The book endeavours to place him in a proper perspective. Selected verses from all the various branches of his poetry, including the Ramainis which have not yet been give adequate attention; have been translated into English verse. These include Sakhis, Ramainis and Padas (including some which find place in the Guru Grantha Sahib). The transliterated version of the verses along with diacritical marks has also been given in each case. The book has a very exhaustive Introduction (life, times -political social and religious trends, sources and views on God, love, maya, devotion and so forth), thus providing a comprehensive study of this universally revered saint and poet.
