I have read many, though not all, of the books from which the quotations were taken, and can recommend them highly, regardless of which doctrinal theology you subscribe to, and even if you are not a Christian, as they go to the heart of the core of the faith.
Yancey is something of a modern C. S. Lewis in re apologetics.
Books excerpted: What's So Amazing About Grace?; Disappointment with God; The Jesus I Never Knew; Where is God When It Hurts?; I Was Just Wondering; Church: Why Bother?; Meet the Bible; Open Windows; Guidance Booklet; Reaching for the Invisible God; Rumors of Another World (seems to be about non-US churches); Trip Notes: South Africa; The Bible Jesus Read. Also articles from "Christianity Today".
NOTES: (Yancey's words in quotes, otherwise a paraphrase)
God wants to be loved, not just feared or even obeyed - obedience out of love is desired.
OT v. NT: touching the Ark led to death, touching Jesus lead to life.
"Grace means that God already loves us as much as an infinite God can possibly love": we ca't do anything to make him love us either more or less (BUT behavior still counts in the judgment and resurrection - my addition).
"The Glory of God is a person fully alive" - Ireneus.
"Hosea proves that God longs not to punish but to love."
The Koran never mentions love, either Allah's for us or us for him, and Aristotle rejects the idea that man can love Zeus, or Zeus love man. ( )
