New York Times bestselling, award-winning creator Bill Willingham presents a new series starring the female Fables. Balancing horror, humor and adventure in the Fables tradition, Fairest explores the secret histories of Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Cinderella, The Snow Queen, Thumbelina, Snow White, Rose Red and others. The first 6-issue tale follows the misadventures of Briar Rose immediately after the events of Fables #107 (collected in Fables Volume 16: Super Team), in which she was stolen away by the goblin army. Following this first collection, Willingham will serve as a consultant on all story arcs and introduce new writers from other mediums to the Fables mythos. Fan-favorite artist Phil Jimenez (Wonder Woman, The Invisibles) returns to Vertigo to pencil the opening storyline. Award-winning cover artist Adam Hughes (Wonder Woman, Batgirl) provides covers, starting with a wraparound cover on issue #1 that spotlights the lovely ladies who will star in the series.… (mehr)

I liked this spin-off. It was unpredictable, and there was lots of funny dialogue, some of which reminded me of my dear Joss Whedon. Getting Willingham's imagined inside scoop on Sleeping Beauty, the Winter Queen and Beauty and the Beast was good fun. ( )

Even though this got confusing at times and I really didn't care for Jonah Panghammer's character, I did enjoy this new spin-off. Love the idea to make a series based on the female Fables and give them new stories and reveal new secrets. Looking forward to the rest of the spin-off. I hope Willingham does a story focused on Ozma or Maddy because they are in Fables a lot now, but we don't know too much about them.

The art in the book is the reason this series will work because the past on-going series Jack of Fables was good in story (until the end) but never cared for the art in that book. Like the original Fables series, I noticed each arch get's it own new artist and the covers remain the same. An the covers are just great each one!

I liked the past to Briar Rose because it finally showed us the Fables version to the Sleeping Beauty tale which is closer to the original then the Disney one. In Fairest we get a jealous fairy named Hadeon who is essentially the same character as Maleficent only true to the original story. I really like the Beauty and the Best stand-alone issue because it's one of the Fables couple that doesn't get too much attention and it also gives us a whole new (and dark) look at Beauty. Poor Beast.

If your a huge Fables fan like me and noticed that the comic book give the female a little more respect then other you will not be disappointed with this. ( )

This is a spinoff of Wilingham’s “Fables” series. It focuses on Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) and Ali Baba. Ali Baba finds himself a bottle and when an imp comes out of it instead of a genie, he is sorely disappointed. However, the imp explains that Ali Baba needs to find the sleeping princess and wake her with “True Love’s Kiss”. When he finds her, though, there are two sleeping women – and he doesn’t know whom to wake, so he wakes them both – Briar Rose and the Snow Queen, who then chases after them to capture them.

This was ok. Maybe I would have liked it more if I’d read it closer to when I was still reading “Fables” and at the point where this one made more sense? As always, the colour illustrations were very nice, but the story left something to be desired. I will not be continuing this spinoff series. ( )

Another day, another Fables subseries. In a nutshell, we have the Winter Queen (back again for the first time in a while) and Sleeping Beauty, both woken by 'true loves' kiss' gone all complicated, as things are wont to do.

All narrated by a fat little blue genie, who can't grant wishes so much as spew pop culture and real world references.

I know right?

In any case, it's an interesting backstory to learn a bit more about Sleeping Beauty in this world (she's actually closer to her Fable than some) and see a bit of a redemption arc for the Winter Queen. I wonder how that will go on the longer run. Well worth the read though.

On top of that, there's also a bit more information about Beauty and the Beasts' child. So that's what Totemkinder meant. Le twist!

Beast Noir? An interesting change in style.

Well that got quickly Cthulhian. For a fairy queen nonetheless. It's an interesting mix. ( )

Is it terrible that I'm more into the Princss spin-offs than the actual Fables series? First Cinderella was awesome (and they need to write more asap), but Fairest is even better because Willingham is back to writing the scripts. Briar Rose's story has touched the main storyarc a few times (she used her sleeping curse to take out a the main city of the Empire), but we are finally getting her magic-ridden tale in its entirety as well as anopther look at Lumi (the Snow Queen). In many ways Lumi is the new character to wastch because she definitely isn't who she was during the Empire's rule, and she has affected many of the other storyarcs (most prominently Jack's and their son's). Hopefully they keep this story going for a while, with either or both of the "fairest" ladies as the protagonist! ( )
