Wichita, Kansas, has grown significantly since the mid-19th century, when a group of pioneering entrepreneurs arrived to build on the trading and hunting activities of the Osage and Wichita peoples. Those early days of commerce gave way to Coleman, Cessna, and other companies whose influence helped shape the city's development. From the Texas cowboys who ran the cattle drives to Lebanese merchants, the population of the city has been as diverse and as dynamic as its companies. This visual history of early Wichita showcases the colorful landmarks, people, and businesses that built the bustling city on the Arkansas River. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |

Among the most interesting parts of the book to me was the 1929 photo that was taken when the Monrovians were playing baseball against the Ku Klux Klan. The Monrovians belonged to the Negro Baseball League. Mr. Price notes tht the Monrovians won that contest in which Catholics were hired to umpire. The choice of members of a church was supposed to show that there was no favoritism for either side. That a bizarre story may just prompt you to searching the Internet for more facts.
Kudos go to Mr. Price, and thanks to Michelle. This work dealing with early day Wichita was a pleasure.
