Plot Summary: While their mom's are in Juneau for two nights getting supplies, Cody and Derek decide to take the car and kayaks to camp out by themselves. Right away, Cody is worried something is wrong, but Derek convinces her to continue. She agrees, but insists they only camp for one night. After devouring almost all of their food, they set up their tent and fall asleep. Cody awakes in the middle of the night by water in their tent and wakes up Derek to help them move it to higher ground. Confused because she checked the tide chart, Cody is baffled that the water is still continuing to rise. Now she knows something is wrong. When they realize Cody's kayak is gone, the one with all of the supplies, they are devastated and more eager to make it back to town for food. They get in Derek's kayak and get onto the water, trying to make it back to the truck when there is a horrible sound, strong wind, and a strong current. Then come the big waves. They hold onto their paddles with all their might until the waves stop. Realizing they need to dry off, Cody has them find a safe, dry place to make a fire and camp out before the dark clouds and a strong wind turn into a storm.
So far, Cody has been the one in charge telling Derek what to do, but Derek steps up when Cody becomes blinded from the sun and has a fever. For days, Derek takes care of Cody. When Cody's fever finally breaks and she is able to start seeing shapes and shadows, Cody gets upset at Derek for befriending a strange man who appears to be following them. Thinking he is a poacher, she wants to do everything she can to get away, but Derek says he trusts him. When Derek disappears, Cody thinks Derek is kidnapped and follows him. Finally, Cody catches up and approaches their camp and is surprised to hear the wildman's real story. He advises them to get to safety by heading away from their town towards the glacier where all of the news trucks are covering the story of the glacier that is blocking the fjord.

Personal Thoughts: This book was very suspenseful and it might have been my personal struggle with wanting to know what was going to happen next, but even after finishing the story I am still a little confused about the reason why the water level kept rising and where the big waves came from. Also, I'm not sure why Cody makes such silly mistakes such as forgetting to pack essential items and double checking to make sure Derek has packed well, and leaving Derek alone without more survival information.
Genre: Action/Adventure: Survival
Pacing: very fast with explanations included
Characters: very few
Frame: map at beginning but is helpful to understand why the water is rising as that creates the problem in the story,
Storyline:
Activity: Black bear vs Grizzly; Global warming, glacier ( )
