Amazing thrill ride. About jumped out of my skin at the end.
Once again Mr. Koontz leaves us on the edge of our seats. ( )

A terrific build up to Odd Apocalypse. It's been a few years since I've read an Odd Thomas novel, so this brought me back into that world and got me ready for the latest adventure of Odd Thomas. ( )

This is available as a Kindle book (actually, three installments, numbered - Odd-ly enough - 1, 2 and 3, but they constitute one novel intended as a free-standing story between events in Odd Hours and the up-coming Odd Apocalypse).

The story involves a small town located by a highway exit not far from a supposedly closed Army base. The town (which actually is populated by members of the same family who run the motel, diner and service station at the exit) has, for five years, been under the influence of some "force" that has terrorized the whole family and controls their entire lives. Odd sets out to free the inhabitants of the town.

The story is not quite like the other Odd Thomas books - it lacks much of the essence of Odd that sets the other stories in the series apart, but it does have a nice sense of suspense about it. Some parts felt a bit contrived, and that's a bit disappointing.

The concept of presenting the story in three individually purchased segments is interesting. If, after buying the first, you don't care for the story, you needn't buy the rest, thus saving money; however, if used unscrupulously, it could be used as a tool to increase the overall price of the book, by hooking you onto the story, then "forcing" you to continue paying to finish the read. Fortunately, Koontz and Amazon use their powers properly, charging only $1.99 per segment, totaling up $5.97 for a complete, novel-length story. I think this is a fair price, and a reasonable price to pay for a fairly good story. ( )

They say that every road leads home if you care to go there. I long for home, for the town of Pico Mundo and the desert in which it blooms, but the roads that I take seem to lead me to one hell after another.
