Originally published in six volumes from 1926 to 1933 by Mark Sullivan, one of the most highly respected journalists of his day, it has now been abridged by an equally eminent journalist, CBS News correspondent Dan Rather. [Editor's Introduction] When Mark Sullivan set out to write the history of hs times, many scoffed at the idea that he could attempt such a thing, and said that he would be better off not trying. [Author's Foreword] Avondale is a village in southeastern Pennsylvania, in Chester County; it is about 40 mils west of Philadelphia and about 8 miles north of the Mason and Dixon line, where that historic boundary curves in an arc to the north, to make room for the "hundreds" of Delaware. The purpose of this narrative is to follow an average American through a quarter century of his country's history, to re-create the flow of the days as he saw them, to picture events in terms of the influence on him, his daily life and ultimate destiny. [Conclusion: An Essay on Optimism] Here Mark Sullivan brings his history lesson to a close. | |
