Presented in a handsome slipcase, 'Lennon Legend' is both an illustrated and an interactive biography of the creative genius - songwriter, artist, social activist - who changed his times. Created with the cooperation of Yoko Ono Lennon, who has opened her archives for this project, the book offers insightful details about every era of John's life, from his early days at art school to the height of Beatlemania to "Imagine." A live recording of that song is included, along with several interviews of John talking about his life and art, on the audio CD contained in this package. Throughout, the book features archival photographs and reproductions of John's handwritten song lyrics, drawings, memorabilia, and personal papers. In all, 40 removable facsimiles can be enjoyed by the reader, several previously unpublished, including an intimate self-portrait in pen and ink and a plea for world peace. It's been said that John Lennon's was the voice of a generation. 'Lennon Legend' celebrates that voice's power to resonate across the generations.… (mehr)

Had previously played with the reproductions in the book but never read it. Nothing new in the text that you probably didn't already know from a basic biography or from reading another book about John or The Beatles.

Despite not having uncovered any new facts about John or Yoko, the book is well written and put together and the inserted reproductions make a nice touch, adding to the text very nicely.

Lennon Legend is not just another Lennon biography. In fact, it's hardly a biography at all. There is a basic, short and to-the-point Lennon life story, but with nothing new or surprising.

What Lennon Legend is, though, is a multi-media celebration. It comes with a CD of Lennon interviews, many of which were quite funny, with Lennon's personality seeping out of every one. Every page of the book is filled with photos, and though the majority of them are well known, it's still a great selection. But, the best part of the Lennon Legend is the removable Lennon memorabilia. On nearly every other page are reproductions of pieces of memorabilia from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (the author, James Henke is curently the curator of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame). Childhood drawings, a report card, handwritten lyrics, Beatles paraphernalia, Bag One drawings, and more. This addition turned a coffee table book into a treasure. It is a bit pricey, but I felt it was fully worth it. ( )
