Retold by Martin Ballard, an Englishman who served in the British Colonial Service in Nigeria in the 1950s, The Emir's Son reads well, offering an engaging narrative. The accompanying illustrations by Gareth Floyd, done in both color and black and white, communicate the sense of frenzied motion inherent in so many of the pranks played by the "Sons of the Wind." I can't say they were precisely to my taste - they felt a little dated - but they were involving. All in all, a lovely retelling, although I'd like to find some Hausa folklore retold by a native. ( )
