Manyoni, a young girl describes her track to her "favorite place" she goes to everyday. Taken through her path to school Manyoni encounters many wildlife creatures on her daily walk to school through the African veld. In Zimbabwe, it is common for children to walk miles to school and on their walks they often encounter wild life, who we find out is often more afraid of you than you should be of them. This book is a great read to help you realize the amazingly different settings people live in and how something as simple as a walk to school can be so different when we live in different places. ( ) Manyoni awakes early in the morning for her long walk to school through the gorgeous landscapes of Zimbabwe. Along the way she encounters many different animals and uses words that may be unfamiliar. This new vocabulary and wide range of wildlife seen throughout the story are explained at the end of the book. Manyoni, a young girl of Zimbabwe, is taking a journey. Along the way, she sees many wild animals, done in soft watercolors, who scurry away as soon as they see her. She has a long walk to school everyday. This book has a picture index of animals at the end. Young children would enjoy being on the look out for certain animals as they read. The story, illustrated by watercolor paintings, of a little girl's long walk to school in Zimbabwe. The text mentions landscape features along the way (e.g., "Manyoni skips past the red sandstone koppies and scrambles over the krantz above Tobwani Dam"), while animals are to be seen on every page. A glossary of African words and their pronunciation is given at the end, as well as a guide to the animals to be found in every location Manyoni passes (e.g., "In the shady kloof: black eagles, impalas, and hadedah ibises" with miniature images of each).
