Uncle Toby had said that there would be castles to explore, with ghosts and things. This helps to cheer up the glum twelve-year old Lovell twins, Tom and Mary, leaving their schools and loving parents to be evacuated to wild Northumbria during World War II.Then the adventure begins. They live with their Aunt Victoria and Uncle Leslie, meet the loveable 'Mrs M', a strange dog called 'Scamp' and, worst, the terrible private tutor, Miss Urquart, from whom they run away to find a mysterious castle seen through an old telescope. Now they are drawn into bizarre supernatural events of a time-warp between the war itself and ancient warfare. They encounter dark forces, as the story twists and turns, and are even rescued by the Royal Navy. Yet, this is only the beginning of more unexpected tragedies before the twins begin to escape from it all.… (mehr)

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the story concept, but just felt it was lacking some. Being a short story sometimes the authors feel they need to overlook some details, but this one could use more. Then when the end came it seemed the author didn't know how to close it so it just ended abruptly. The author shows lots of potential but this one just didn't measure up. ( )

I was disappointed, as the idea of a story about children evacuated to Northumberland during World War II has so much potential and it just wasn't achieved in this book. Was this really a finished product, or a proof copy? There are several grammatical and punctuation errors. As other reviewers have said it is really a short story and I thought there were too many episodes packed into it. It needs more detail and development to be convincing. It's unevenly paced, as though the author didn't know how to finish it and rushed the ending. The supernatural elements come across as confusing rather than mysterious or spooky. ( )

I did enjoy the book for what it was. The book skipped around or jumped ahead a bit that I thought information was left out. I guess I wanted more detail that was not needed for a children's book.

I received this book through the Early Reviews program. It is a story for children and it sounded like a fun book for young-at-heart adults. Be aware that this is really just a short story as I read the entire book in about two hours. The first part of the story started out fine, but by the middle half it felt rushed and the ending was extremely abrupt and, I believe, might upset or confuse a child. There were several events in the book that were not explained, i.e. the dog Scamp. Overall, I think the story has a lot of potential and the author just needs to really fill out the story to make it really good. ( )

1939 in Britain brought the war home with a vengeance and many London children were either sent to the country to stay with relatives or unknown families who volunteered to take them in. Among these are Tom and Mary Lovell, 12-yr old twin sent to live with their Aunt Victoria and Uncle Leslie.
Vicky and Uncle Leslie run a huge farm and don’t have a lot of time to spend with the kids so they find their own entertainment. They also find a cute small dog they name Scamp. The only odd thing is they only see him in times of stress. Mrs “M”, the housekeeper, has never seen him nor have the other two adults.
This short tale brings home the separation children of London were subjected to by many well-meaning parents. Some children’s trips didn’t turn out as well as the Lovell’s so they were fortunate. This YA novel will also be enjoyed by adults for the history content alone. Your World History student should read this one. ( )
