Beneath the towering bleached ribs of a dead, ancient beast lies New Crobuzon, a squalid city where humans, Re-mades, and arcane races live in perpetual fear of Parliament and its brutal militia. The air and rivers are thick with factory pollutants and the strange effluents of alchemy, and the ghettos contain a vast mix of workers, artists, spies, junkies, and whores. In New Crobuzon, the unsavory deal is stranger to none -- not even to Isaac, a brilliant scientist with a penchant for Crisis Theory. Isaac has spent a lifetime quietly carrying out his unique research. But when a half-bird, half-human creature known as the Garuda comes to him from afar, Isaac is faced with challenges he has never before fathomed. Though the Garuda's request is scientifically daunting, Isaac is sparked by his own curiosity and an uncanny reverence for this curious stranger. While Isaac's experiments for the Garuda turn into an obsession, one of his lab specimens demands attention: a brilliantly colored caterpillar that feeds on nothing but a hallucinatory drug and grows larger -- and more consuming -- by the day. What finally emerges from the silken cocoon will permeate every fiber of New Crobuzon -- and not even the Ambassador of Hell will challenge the malignant terror it invokes ...… (mehr)

Ultimately a fantastic book. The novel will take almost 200 pages to get going so hang in there and enjoy Mieville's seemingly pointless (it's not) lush, bizarre, and adjective laden descriptions of New Crobuzon and its denizens.

I suppose this is categorized as science fiction, but its really a complex horror novel with a very unique take on the usual tropes. There is also a lot more going on here than basic horror, with multiple themes running the length of the book. It is also very steampunky.

Once you finish the novel you will realize the focal character is not who you think it is. Read it, then think about it for a bit.

Once the plot gets going the story becomes very suspenseful and is actually very action packed. I found myself page turning through the last 1/3 of the book. ( )

*yawn* looking for well-written science fiction and this came up in a list... Apparently lots of folks mistake "wordy" for well-written. ( )

A fun weird horror romp. Not what I expected and it took a while to get started but the second half was great. I found it jarring that the storylines were all over the place in terms of detail, but rather had a roving eye that gazed upon characters randomly, some in great detail, others in apparent insufficient detail. I would have liked to have heard more about the constructs before they became central to the story. We heard much more about the remades and they were only side colour. One of the few novels where I would want a few dozen more chapters of world and character development. ( )

Perdido Street Station is a well written and absorbing story aimed at breaking the rules for a number of different fantasy concepts.
