FBI agent Mercy Gunderson, back home after some four months spent completing her training at Quantico, shows her playful side as she teases her on-duty boyfriend, Sheriff Mason Dawson. Although things threaten to go catawampus, their rendezvous goes pretty much as Mercy had hoped . . . until a call for help interrupts their encounter. Mercy accompanies Mason as he answers the call and discovers that, despite the law, there are some things that simply remain unfixable.

Told from Mercy’s point of view, the story offers readers an eye-opening and sobering look at what law enforcement can . . . and cannot . . . accomplish. In this one day in Mercy’s life in Eagle River, South Dakota, events run the gamut from adventurous, to violent, to sexy, to humorous as readers are drawn into Mercy’s world.

The captivating plot and two intriguing nuanced characters work together to keep the pages turning in this brief but breathtaking story. It stands on its own for readers who have not yet read any of the books in the series

Mercy has come home after four months and learns a little more of what goes on in town around her as she accompanies her significant other, the sheriff on a call.

A concise narrative drives this short story's plot and characters. Perhaps, it is the shortness of this tale, but it somehow feels lackluster and/or incomplete.

The main characters are strong-willed and authentic.

Overall, an adequate read. ( )
