The Class Trip from the Black Lagoon is a great chapter book for children who are comfortable reading independently. It is also a fun book to read aloud to children in early/mid elementary as it has a number of humorous words and situations. There were a number of things that I liked about the book. I love the ironic names and style of writing that Thaler uses. He also purposefully misspells words that a young child might mispronounce, writing them as they would sound if a child said them wrong. The illustrations are good as well, though I think this book could be even more enjoyable given some more colorful illustrations. All in all, this is a great book to have in any home or class library. ( )

This is great. It is so hard to find these books anymore and reading them is fun no matter what age. ( )

Was bored and wanting to give my self a little treat. So I did just that with this book. Unfortunately the kids who owned it managed to rip a page or two out, so I had to use my imagination. But this book was good for what is was. The illustrations especially will grab your attention... Is it just me but isN'T the book SCARY?! ( )

The Class Trip from the Black Lagoon is a great book for children because it is short, a beginner chapter book, and has comic relief. However, some humor in this book may be above a students head. First off, this book is very short; it is only 64 pages long and has 11 chapters. This is also a beginner chapter book because there are accompanying pictures to the words. This is great because if a students has difficulty reading the words, or they are getting tired because it is too long for them, they can still understand the book based on the pictures. For example, one exert of text reads, "One class went on a picnic to an active volcano. It erupted and all they ever found were 15 toasted peanut butter and jelly sandwiches." The picture that follows is a volcano spewing pieces of bread. In addition, there are many instances of comic relief. For example, "A kid named Chris Colmbus sailed the ocean. He got very seasick." Also, "In my history class, I learned a lot about some famous class trips. Lewis and Clark's class went across America. They couldn't find one open motel." However, although these lines are funny to me and other people educated on these topics, children may not find them funny because they do not know the actual history. The children will still enjoy the book, and the idea that the main character is exaggerates about the class trip. ( )
