Fiction. Mystery. Romance. Historical Fiction. Colonel William Reid has returned home from India to retire near his children. Upon his return to the Isles, however, he finds that one of his daughters has vanished. Having served as second-in-command to the Pink Carnation, one of England's most intrepid spies, it would be impossible for Gwendolyn Meadows to give up the intrigue of Paris for a quiet life. But, when the Pink Carnation's little sister goes missing, Gwen reluctantly returns home to investigate the girl's disappearance. Thrown together by circumstance, Gwen and William must cooperate to track down the young ladies before others get their hands on them. But Gwen's partnership with quick-tongued, roguish William may prove to be even more of an adventure for her than finding the lost girls.… (mehr)

Crisscrossing romances is the approach of this novel. The opening scene is Sussex 2004, Colin and Eloise are in the midst of a romantic relationship and she's researching the Pink Carnation, a spy from the Napoleonic era, with ties to Colin's family.

Then we cross into the past with Gwendolyn Meadows, fearsome spinster and chaperone of Miss Jane Wooliston, in Paris, stalking Talleyrand. Then Jane receives news that her younger sister is missing from her school in England. They return to England and discover a second young miss has left the school, Miss Lizzy Reid, daughter of Colonel William Reid.

Gwen, who styles herself as the Purple Plumeria, and Colonel Reid become romantically entwined and marry at the end of the book. The missing schoolgirls are found and all ends happily ever after.

Another worthy addition to the Pink Carnation series - I never pictured Miss Gwen as the heroine in a romance, but I'm glad she was! ( )

I loved this book. It was a fun read with plenty of suspense and humor and a delightful love story intertwined. ( )

I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway.

I enjoyed reading this book. It had some unexpected twists and surprises. The spy part of the story got a little far-fetched for my tastes but it was a good story overall. I'd like to have the story of Colonel Reid and Miss Meadows future expanded upon. ( )

Gwendolyn Meadows has been the companion of Jane Wooliston, the Pink Carnation, since the start of the series and now we finally get to see who she really is! Jane's younger sister Agnes has gone missing so Jane and Gwendolyn return to England to find her. They are thrown together with Colonel William Reid, the father of Agnes roommate, also missing. Gwen and William concentrate on the search while Jane waits for news. The reader us treated to the background story of Gwen which is sensational. At the same time, as in all the other Pink Carnation novels, the reader also sees the current time romance of Eloise and Colin and the difficulties that they encounter during the research saga.

One of the best so far! ( )

To Tasha Alexander, Tracy Grant, Sarah Maclean, Deanna Raybourn, and Beatriz Williams: wonderful writers and even better friends; and to Claudia Brittenham for keeping me from tossing the whole thing into the shredder.
