The long-awaited follow-up to 2011's Slash & Burn.

In a small Lao village, a very strange thing has happened. A woman was shot and killed in her bed during a burglary; she was given a funeral and everyone in the village saw her body burned. Then, three days later, she was back in her house as if she'd never been dead at all. But now she's clairvoyant, and can speak to the dead. That's why the long-dead brother of a Lao general has enlisted her to help his brother uncover his remains, which have been lost at the bottom of a river for many years.

Lao national coroner Dr. Siri Paiboun and his wife, Madame Daeng, are sent along to supervise the excavation. It could be a kind of relaxing vacation for them, maybe, except Siri is obsessed with the pretty undead medium's special abilities, and Madame Daeng might be a little jealous. She doesn't trust the woman for some reasonâ??is her hunch right? What is the group really digging for at the bottom of this remote river on the Thai border? What war secrets are being covered up?… (mehr)

I was so glad to see another Dr. Siri book, the way he ended the last one I wasn't sure he'd continue. As always the mystery is a bit of an excuse to enjoy the company of the usual round of characters in the fascinating surroundings of Laos ( )

I enjoyed Daeng's life story. I am glad that Bpoo choreographed her exit so well! I am willing to say goodbye to this series if need be. ( )

As enjoyable as every other book in this wonderful series. Full of humour, suspense, intelligence and great characterisation. They also capture so much of what I loved about Laos even though I visited at a very different time. ( )

And a half star. I do really like the Dr Siri mystery books but I can't give them all four stars. I'm mean. This one was a bit predictable as we've come to know both Dr Siri and Colin Cotterill so well but I'm not complaining - I read them for comfort as well as entertainment - and I'm glad I haven't yet come to the end of the series. Dr. Siri is intrigued by a report of a woman come back from the dead, in full contact with the spirits that stayed on their side, and when asked to investigate, he takes the opportunity. Meanwhile, someone is looking for Madame Daeng, a farang who might or might not be her former lover. All the usual suspects abound, and we learn a lot about Daeng's past as she reveals it to Dr. Siri. In the end, the mystery of the woman who wouldn't die is revealed, and the dead are satisfied. ( )

Cotterill has never been better than in this ninth outing for acerbic Dr. Siri Paiboun (after 2011’s Slash and Burn), set in Laos in October 1978...Siri, who views the boundary between the natural and the supernatural worlds as porous, soon finds himself in the midst of the most baffling murder case of his career. The action builds to an ingenious resolution.

Madame Keui was flesh and blood, or so they claimed, although nobody could remember touching that re-warmed flesh, nor seeing her bleed; not even when a second bullet passed through her.
