Fiction. Romance. HTML:

Opposites attract, but heaven help these two.

Tattoo artist Seth Wheeler thinks he's struck gold when Darren Romero rents the apartment across the hall. The new guy is gorgeous, witty, and single, plus he's just the right blend of bold and flirtatious. Perfect.

Except then Darren reveals that he moved to Tucker Springs to take a job as the youth pastor at the New Light Church. Seth is not only an atheist, but was thrown out by his ultra-religious family when he came out. He tends to avoid believers, not out of judgment but out of self-preservation.

But Darren doesn't give up easily, and he steadily chips away at Seth's defenses. Darren is everything Seth wants in a man . . . except for that one massive detail he just can't overlook. Is Darren's religion the real problem, or is it just a convenient smoke screen to keep him from facing deeper fears? It's either see the light, or risk pushing Darren away forever.

When I read the description and saw it was a romance involving a minister, I was sure what to expect... perhaps a slow burn...

I enjoyed this story a lot and was surprised throughout. ( )

The Tucker Springs, Colorado, series, of which this is the latest title, has been surprise after surprise as far as plots are concerned. This one is no exception, connecting an atheist tattoo artist and a Christian youth minister.

Seth Wheeler is immediately smitten with the man who moves into the apartment across from him above the tattoo parlor where he works — until he finds out Darren Romero is a Christian youth minister. Seth’s ultra-religious family threw him out of the house and has refused to speak to him since he came out to them.

When Seth realizes his regard for Darren is returned and they get together a few times, they share lusty sex even though Seth keeps telling Darren that just because they enjoy each other sexually doesn’t mean Seth will revert back to the staunch Christian he was before.

Darren is fine with that, seeing his own spirituality as separate from his physical attraction. Darren also sees how good Seth is with some of the troubled and rejected teens who come to the youth center Darren has set up in Tucker Springs.

Seth has helped a silent, depressed transsexual join the group despite the teen’s fear that the group will reject her just as vocally as others have. Also, in a beautifully written episode, Seth turns away an underage boy who desperately wants to get a tattoo, not by saying that the kid isn’t old enough to get one, but by letting the boy make up his own mind after receiving all the facts.

What makes this book stand out as a romance, however, are the discussions Seth and Darren have about religion and God.

How do you describe a book when all you can think is “Wow…”? I would never have thought of putting a minister in a gay romance novel but Witt makes the combination work. This story was especially sweet with the mix of a hard-living yet mellow (and atheist) tattoo artist and an easy-going, open-minded youth minister. The premise may seem far-fetched in the real world (although I suppose it is possible) but it works here and comes off as quite everyday.

This is why I call it a “Wow” book – the kind of book where I become so enamored of the characters and immersed in their back-stories that by the end of the first chapter I feel as if I have a personal stake in the relationship. I’m invested. Which is what I love about Witt’s writing – she grabs me from the first first word and keeps me hooked through til the end.

It doesn’t hurt that I have my own personal stake in the Tucker Springs. My best friend and buddy is a sweet Beagle named Tucker. He is the reason I was first attracted to the series – simply for the name and for the authors involved in the project. I’ve relished each story set in Tucker Springs, even though they’re written by different authors. The great thing is that one book is not dependent upon the others so they can be read in any order, at any time.
