This small, bright and shiny book will certainly catch the eye of any Lego-obsessed child. As is described in the Note to Parents on the first page, this book is part of a program for beginning readers that claims to engage and interest readers while improving literacy skills. Each book is assigned a level, and this particular book is a level 2 for children beginning to read alone. In this book, Lego monsters are introduced with vivid physical descriptions and summaries of their powers. Each spread offers several sentences, some of which contain challenging vocabulary, which may frustrate a new independent reader. The illustrations are a mixture of glossy photographs of the figurines and muted computer-generated backgrounds. A glossary and index are also included, though each does not appear extensive or even thorough. Though children who love Legos may enjoy this book, there are many better options available that will inspire a lifelong love of books for beginning readers. ( )
