A play about a religious hypocrite from the Age of Enlightenment, Tartuffe is a scathing condemnation of both the fallacies of the Church and the naivete of people who will believe anything. The advanced rhyme scheme is flawless and expertly crafted without being dense. The female characters are delightfully witty, which stems from the new ideas then spreading across Europe. In fact, many of the sayings and cliches that we use today come from the very lines of Tartuffe. While the ending is a blatant and somewhat unsatisfying example of deus ex machina, it still holds and essential theme that pervades the play. While Moliere asks his audience to not rely on the redemptive qualities God offers, he, at the same time, writes a conclusion that itself relies heavily on the salvation of a living god (the King). This itself could be a hypocrisy, and therefore brings the crux of the idea to a resounding climax. ( ) keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
