In spring 1939 O'Keeffe spent 9 weeks in Hawai'i. During her 2-week stay on Maui, she was guided by her host's 12-year old daughter. Now 85, Patricia tells of showing O'Keeffe the valleys and hills of Wailuku and the waterfalls, jungles, lava bridges, and black-sand beaches of Hana. The two formed a deep bond that influenced the rest of Patricia's life.… (mehr)

I thought I had seen or collected every book on Georgia O'Keefe. Having been to Hawaii and then finding this book, it was as if I was back in Hawaii. The colors are so vibrant and the subject matter so her. It's a wonderful book to have- and living in the Winter Wonderland, it will be my escape during the long winters of snow and grey.

This is an exquisite book. It gives us a clear glimpse into the life of Georgia O'Keefe from the viewpoint of her 12 year old Hana, Maui friend and guide. I love the paintings and photos interspersed in the pages. This book is a joy to read. I have given it to one friend and plan to give it to some more. The book is captivating, informative, and beautiful. Bravo!

O'Keeffe had a brief but artistically productive stay in Hawaii in 1939. The trip (arranged by Dole Pineaaple Co.) produced 20 paintings. Her letters to her husband show that she also captured the texture of the islands and the people.

Beautiful book, I love to look at it when it is a dark or rainy day where I live, to remember the beauty of Hawaii from my last trip. Text is also interesting history about O'Keeffe. O'Keeffe is my favorite artist but previously I was more familiar with her other works on landscapes, flowers and Autumn leaves...but this one is also a treat, showing a side of O'Keeffe I didn't know about previously.

I read about this book on the plane to Hawaii; the in-flight magazine had an article about the author's family's two weeks hosting O'Keeffe on Maui in 1939. Patricia Jennings was then 12-years old, and it was fascinating to read about her interactions with the 50-something O'Keeffe. The book contains Jennings' own record of their time together.
The book also contains the 20 paintings O'Keeffe did during her two months (some sources say three, some say nine weeks) in Hawaii. Some of those paintings I recognized, but had no idea of their origin.
The book also has the letters she wrote to her husband, the photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, from Hawaii. Some of them are reproduced in her own handwriting.
For O'Keeffe fans - and Hawaii fans! - this book is quite enjoyable. Review by Writer's Daughter
