The Horse in My Garage and Other Stories is a hilarious addition to Patrick F. McManus's existing work in humor. The author weighs in on his childhood, everyday life, and outdoor tales with his typical exaggerated commentary that will elicit a belly laugh from all types of readers. Read about the antics of Patrick's friends Rancid Crabtree and Retch Sweeney in such stories as "Shaping Up for the Hunt" and "Bear Hunters." McManus plays off the recent obsession with hoarders in his surprising story "The Lady Who Kept Things." In the titular story, meet Patrick's horse, Huckleberry, and enjoy the experience of all the problems that come along with owning your own horse--or keeping him in the garage. Other great stories include: "Catch-And-Eaters," about the importance of a forked stick when fishing "$7000 TV Historical Extravaganza," a look at one director's loose interpretation of historical accuracy and political correctness "A Lake Too Far," concerning the woes of Patrick and his wife, Bun, on a fateful birding trip in Australia "Chicken Chronicles," which involves Patrick's memory of wandering around naked in the chicken yard when guests came to call So pull up a chair, sit back, and enjoy laughing to the hilarious adventures of Patrick F. McManus in The Horse in My Garage and Other Stories.… (mehr)

I prefer McManus's other humor story collections. This one appears to have been put together from cast-offs that he never bothered to submit for publication. It's kind of repetitive -- sometimes passages appear word-for-word the same in different stories -- and I don't think the stories are as funny as in his other books. (Perhaps that's why he did not have them published originally.) I would recommend this only for McManus completists. ( )

I found this on accident. You see, I’ve had all of Patrick’s book collections in paperback since I was young. I love his stuff so much that his books are some of the few books I kept from my childhood. I was actually looking to replace my battered, tornup, stained copies with Kindle editions when I stumbled upon the fact that Patrick had put out a new book of stories! I bought it immediately, never mind the ever-growing backlist of paid books I have yet to read.

I devoured the entire book in a single Saturday. I’ll be honest – there isn’t much here for new readers. Much of his older stuff is much better (for new readers I highly recommend ‘The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw‘ as your starting point – watch for a Nostalgia Review coming soon to this blog!) But there are a few gems nestled among the un-edited roughs that make up most of the stories.

The Lady Who Kept Things is the shining jewel of this collection. An original piece of comedic horror, you’ll see the end coming but still love every minute of it.

$7000 TV Historical Extravaganza and Wild Life in a Room with a View tied for my second favorite. These are interesting because they were actual series newspaper stories written by Patrick before he got his start as a humor writer. Despite being factual articles, Patrick still manages to put his unique twist on the story, making them laugh-out-loud funny at parts.

The rest of book kept my attention, in part because there are quite a few stories about his early life – about how he became a writer, how he met his wife Bun (who is a feature in several of my favorite stories from other books), and other interesting tidbits.

However, several of the stories have obviously not been edited, and a couple even feature repeated chunks of text (some repeated within this same book, other chunks repeated from older stories).

Overall, I give this 4 stars for old fans – mainly for the nostalgia kick – but only 2 stars if you are new to the Comedic Genius that is Patrick McManus. ( )

Didn't find this one as funny as his other books. Almost felt forced in places. ( )
