This was my daughter's first manga when she was young. I saved it for many years, and now I took the time to read it. It was a delight. It's about strong women and friendship. It's about keeping evil forces from gaining power. It's about beauty. It's about romance. It's also about a black cat (I love back cats since my daughter has one). The cat's name in the book is Luna, which means moon in Spanish. I speak some Spanish so I also love the cat's name.

The drawings in the book are gorgeous. I would love to color in the pages, but I wouldn't want to ruin the book. I think I'll save it for my granddaughter. I think she'll appreciate it when she gets to be the right age as her older brother is now well indoctrinated into shonen (manga for boys).

I think there's probably nothing like Sailor Moon as it has become such a classic. I would dearly love to read the continuing series if I can get hold of those books. I'd love to know what happens to Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and, of course, Tuxedo Mask and Luna, too. There shall be some fun reading ahead for me.

One thing in this book made me laugh. It talks about a floppy disk. Who even knows what that is any more?!

I also loved the notes from Naoko (the author) to the reader sprinkled throughout the book. The print is so tiny, though. I guess most of the readers of this series have better eyesight and are younger than this seventy-something me. ( )

I'll preface this by saying that my nostalgia for this series probably isn't as much of a factor for me as it is for other people. I DID watch Sailor Moon on Toonami as a kid, but I was more into following DBZ and didn't watch SM nearly as often. That being said, I've always known the gist, I have a short novelization somewhere that covers the first few chapters of the manga, and I've wanted to read and watch the entire series for years.

I bought the two volumes of Sailor V, and the two box sets of SM back in 2016, but I only got through maybe volume 5 of SM before I started reading other stuff. (Still need to pick up the short stories collections.)

SO. I decided to start over, and here we are.

I will say that I understand why SM had such an impact on anime and manga (specifically of the magical girl genre, but also others). It's got a bit of everything. It took the superhero team and threw it into a vat of glitter, short skirts, and magical transformations. Obviously that's not all SM is, but you can see its influence everywhere, even today. And that's not a bad thing.

In itself, though, it's a super rushed story and a lot of it makes me roll my eyes. None of the actual "mysteries" take more than maybe two chapters to solve. One thing that always bothered me about the anime was that bad guys took one little attack to beat, so there was never really any tension in fights, and that is definitely also present in the manga. Plus, Luna just conveniently whips out new weapons and tools that perfectly solve every situation, every time. Bleh.

I also still don't understand the decision to make the girls 14. I get the whole "these are just our forms for Earth-living" thing, but...why 14? The story wouldn't be any different if they'd been like, seniors in high school or something, and they would have been just as relatable.

In short, I get it. The series is still pretty fun, it's cute and sparkly, and the overall story is interesting. The girl power themes are great, and most of the team is really solid and dependable. (I've always really liked Ami, because of the water alignment and bookishness.) I definitely intend to read the entire series, regardless of the things that could be better and the fact that it's just goofy and campy. I just can't take the series as seriously as I might others. It's cheesy, but moves faster than original anime. Reading online because the new Sailor Moon Crystal series is supposed to be more faithful to the manga- and after doing so, the art choices for Crystal make way more sense (especially the placement of facial features- I thought Crystal was weirdly exaggerated/"pretty", but it does match the art style better).

I reread this to avoid comfort eating while i was upset after breaking up with my boyfriend last week. I couldn't get enough of this in seventh grade, but rereading this 8 years later isn't quite the same. Its a little silly, repetitive, but enjoyable none the less. Definitely an excellent mindless read, especially when stressed (and healthier than eating a package of oreos!). :)

Do not combine the original print with the shinsouban. The original print for Sailor Moon has 18 volumes and the reprints (shinsouban: 新装版) have the chapters regrouped to complete in 12 volumes. Volume 1 for the original print contains Acts 1-5, while Volume 1 for the shinsouban contains Acts 1-6.
