So the plot is very predictable, as it feels like a retelling of journey to the center of the earth kind of vibes but with some tweaks. Story is interesting but feels rather complete and like I dont have a reason to read book two. The secondary character are mostly background noise for me and not ones I was fascinated by? but.... I like Well's books so I'll still probably read the second one too at some point. ( ) Emilie has run away from home, heading for her cousin’s, when she stows away on a ship and ends up travelling to another world. This is also very Martha Wells-ish, with lots of emphasis on exploring strange new places and having adventures. However, due to Emilie’s status as a stowaway, and because she’s a teenager tagging along, as unobtrusively as she can, she doesn’t have very close relationships with any of the other characters (although there are some she does become fond of). And that suits this story -- but I thought it was a shame, because I like the way Wells writes about found-families and about characters Having Emotions. Maybe there will be more of that in the sequel? keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
While running away from home for reasons that are eminently defensible, Emilie's plans to stow away on the steamship Merry Bell and reach her cousin in the big city go awry, landing her on the wrong ship and at the beginning of a fantastic adventure. Taken under the protection of Lady Marlende, Emilie learns that the crew hopes to use the aether currents and an experimental engine, and with the assistance of Lord Engal, journey to the interior of the planet in search of Marlende's missing father. With the ship damaged on arrival, they attempt to traverse the strange lands on their quest. But when evidence points to sabotage and they encounter the treacherous Lord Ivers, along with the strange race of the sea-lands, Emilie has to make some challenging decisions and take daring action if they are ever to reach the surface world again.
