Vorví a Rusia en Noviembre de 1914, a comienzos de la primera
ra mundial, tras un largo viaje por el Egipto, Ceylán y la India、La
guerra había estallado cuando yo me encontraba en Colombo, desde
donde emprendí mi viaje de regreso pasando por Inglaterra.

Cuando sali de San Petersburgo, al emprender mi viaje hacia el
Oriente, habia dicho que iba "en busca de lo milagroso". Es muy dificil
definir lo "milagroso". Para mí, sin embargo, esta palabra tenía
un significado muy preciso. Hacía mucho tiempo que había llegado
a la conclusión de que no podríamos salir del laberinto de
contradicciones en que vivimos a menos que emprendamos un camino
totalmente nuevo, un camino muy diferente a todos los caminos que hasta
ahora conocemos. Pero mc era imposible decir donde comenzaba este nuevo
camino. Para ese entonces me había ya convencido de un hecho imposible
de negar: más allá de este frágil velo de falsa realidad existe una
realidad de la cual algo nos separa por algún motivo. Lo "milagroso
era, pues, la penetración en esta desconocida realidad. Y pensaba que
el camino hacia lo desconocido se hallaba en el Oriente. ¿Por qué en
el Oriente? Me era sumamente difícil contestar esta pregunta. Quizás
había en esta idea algo romántico, pero bien pudo haber sido una
convicción realista y absoluta de que, en todo caso. nada podria hallar en
Europa.

Durante mi viaje de regreso, y durante las semanas que había pasado
en Londres, todo cuanto yo había pensado sobre los resultados de
mi búsqueda cayó en la mayor de las confusiones, arrojada por el
absurdo de la guerra y por todas las emociones que saturaban el ambiente,
las conversaciones y los periódicos; todo ello me afectaba muy a menudo,
y la mayoría de las veces me afectaba contra mi voluntad.
