"Um lance de dados jamais abolirá o acaso" foi o primeiro poema tipográfico, explorando as possiblidades da tecnologia de impressão de textos, publicado em 1897 na revista "Cosmopolis" por este poeta simbolista. A respeito da sua estrutura, o poeta chamou as linhas (ou versos) de "subdivisões prismáticas" formando "ilhas de significação" e "brancos" - o branco da página. O poema aproveita o espaço para indicar o ritmo da leitura e as pausas. Deu origem a várias experiências do tipo, praticadas por Apollinaire (Caligramas) e pelos futuristas italianos e russos. Mais tarde, pelos concretistas, neoconcretistas, popcretistas etc etc. - a chamada "segunda vanguarda" dos movimentos surgidos a partir da década de 1950, relacionados principalmente à visualidade da obra poética. Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-98) was born in Paris and is widely regarded as one of the most important figures of nineteenth-century French poetry. Jeff Clark's book designs have been praised in theNew Yorker,Better Living Through Design, Cool Hunting,Granta, and other venues. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. Robert Bononno has received two NEA grants for translations of French authors and was a finalist for the French-American Foundation Translation Prize for his translation of René Crevel.
