This rating concerns the first edition of The birth of the Palestinian refugee problem, 1947-1949, for I have been informed by a well-read associate that, due to the author's radical political realignment following the outbreak of the second intifada, the current edition has been revised in order to bring its thesis in accordance with the author's newfound hardliner perspective. While I can't speak to the validity of the revised text, I found the original monograph to be extremely well researched, thoroughly convincing, and, all in all, a must read for anyone invested in the tumultuous, dyadic history of Israel and Palestine. Interested parties would be well advised to seek out an older copy of the work. Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Literaturhinweise zu diesem Werk aus externen Quellen. Wikipedia auf Englisch (49)This book is the first full-length study of the birth of the Palestinian refugee problem. Based on recently declassified Israeli, British and American state and party political papers and on hitherto untapped private papers, it traces the stages of the 1947-9 exodus against the backdrop of the first Arab-Israeli war and analyses the varied causes of the flight. The Jewish and Arab decision-making involved, on national and local levels, military and political, is described and explained, as is the crystallisation of Israel's decision to bar a refugee repatriation. The subsequent fate of the abandoned Arab villages, lands and urban neighbourhoods is examined. The study looks at the international context of the war and the exodus, and describes the political battle over the refugees' fate, which effectively ended with the deadlock at Lausanne in summer 1949. Throughout the book attempts to describe what happened rather than what successive generations of Israeli and Arab propagandists have said happened, and to explain the motives of the protagonists. Update (almost 2 years after the first reading): Read through it a second time, this time for a graduate seminar in the Arab-Israeli Conflict. I think I got a lot more from it this time, but I could still give it a third and probably a fourth reading. This thing is rich in detail and presents a complex and nuanced approach to the causes and continued existence of the refugee problem. Maybe it's a sign that I've been studying history for too long, but this time around I found some parts of the book exciting. Still, it's definitely not something I would call pleasure reading. Worth it though if you have an interest in Israeli history in general, the 48 war, or current Middle Eastern politics. ( )
