Victor Hoppe, un investigador de dudosa moral y cierta ceguera emocional, se ve obligado a dejar la universidad. By chance, I came to this soon after reading John Wyndham’s The Chrysalids, which gave it an even stranger flavour: it felt, at times, like a cross between Frankenstein and The Midwich Cuckoos. But Stefan Brijs’s novel is more disturbing than either of these because it is so plausible, and because there is such an ironic contrast between the godlike dreams of its protagonist and the sheltered world in which he tries to bring them about...

This was a weiiiird book. I'm just so weirded out by the disturbing actions of the main character that I can't quite figure out what I thought of the book =| ( )

A peculiarly awful book set in Belgium a few years ago, in a town near the Drielandenpunt where a new local doctor moves in with his triplet sons and a sinister unspoken history of discredited scientific experimentation. I thought that the book was trying to navigate the fuzzy boundary between mainstream Belgian literature and horror, and frankly got lost en route, going for shock rather than substance. I got it because I'm always on the lookout for books about Belgium that have made a minor hit in English, but this wasn't worth it. ( )

Ik kan me inbeelden dat dit een boek is dat veel mensen aanspreekt, maar ik moet toch al onmiddellijk bekennen dat het mij niet meer deed dan een gemiddelde horrorfilm. Brijs kan schrijven, dat is duidelijk: de auteur is op elk moment heer en meester van zijn compositie door een sterke verhaallijn, wisselende taalregisters, regelmatig verschuivende perspectieven en vooral een goede beheersing van de spanningsboog. De thematiek van de ‘engelmakerij’, de bio-engineering van menselijke wezens verheft dit spannend verhaal tot een hoger niveau, en geeft de roman door zijn Frankenstein-achtig karakter van bij het begin een ‘gothic’ ondertoon. Tegelijk zijn er nog twee extra maatschappelijke lagen aangebracht: het te kijk stellen van het katholicisme met zijn onbekwame en hypocriete pastoors en zijn strenge, gefrustreerde internaatsnonnen; en de wetenschappelijke wereld waar naijver en onverantwoordelijkheidsgevoel de boventoon voeren; en dan mogen we daar nog de ‘asperger’-problematiek van Hoppe aan toevoegen. Een hele cocktail dus, die maakt dat dit verhaal ver uitstijgt boven het klassieke horrorverhaal. Maar… de hele psychologische worsteling van hoofdpersonage Victor Hoppe met zijn vader en met een bepaald Godsbeeld, een paar onwaarschijnlijke verhaalwendingen, en vooral de lugubere en nogal vergezochte finale, waren er voor mij toch wel te veel aan. Absoluut verdienstelijk, dat wel, maar dit verhaal liet me koud. ( )
