Mackay's intent is to reconcile the two extremes of pure profit maximization at one end and the abandonment of the profit motive at the other. The result is a meaningful structure for achieving mutual financial success across the stakeholder groups necessary to any business. I gained from the perspective and also found this book to be well written. It has the right mix of principles, cases, and studies, including plenty (but not too much) based on Mackay's experience with Whole Foods. ( )
[This book] will leave Milton Friedman, scourge of the corporate social-responsibility crowd, spinning in his grave. But even the most determined profit-maximizers may find ideas here that challenge deeply held beliefs. . . . [Co-authors John MAckey and Raj Sisodia] argue that the mathematical framework of free-market economics--developed by neoclassical economists in the 20th century--fundamentally mischaracterizes the true character of capitalism . . . [which is to have] a clear purpose, beyond just making money.
In this New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, Whole Foods Market cofounder John Mackey and professor and Conscious Capitalism, Inc. cofounder Raj Sisodia argue for the inherent good of both business and capitalism. Featuring some of today's best-known and most successful companies, they illustrate how these two forces can-and do-work most powerfully to create value for all stakeholders, including customers, employees, suppliers, investors, society, and the environment.Conscious Capitalism helps us better understand how companies such as Southwest Airlines, Costco, UPS, Panera, Patagonia, Google, The Container Store, and many others, use four specific tenets-higher purpose, stakeholder integration, conscious leadership, and conscious culture and management-to build strong businesses, advance capitalism toward its highest potential, and foster a more positive environment for all of us.
