Jan Brett writes a beautiful story but the true star of the show are her gorgeous illustrations. I love how the stunning art in the central picture is augmented by the secondary story being told in the images in the side bar. She is a tee master of her craft. ( )

Jan Brett's strengths are realistic drawings of animals and borders filled with small drawings that add to the story.

When Annie's beloved cat disappears into the forest one cold winter day, Annie becomes lonely and sets out to find another animal friend. She comes up with different ways in which she could retrieve another pet. One of the ways she comes up with is to leave corn cakes outside and find the animal that eats them. Doing this she comes across a variety of different animals.
