"They came from the sky parachuting out of military helicopters to invade Tucker Pierce's idyllic hometown on Pemberwick Island, Maine. They call themselves SYLO and they are a secret branch of the U.S. Navy. SYLO's commander, Captain Granger, informs Pemberwick residents that the island has been hit by a lethal virus and must be quarantined. Now Pemberwick is cut off from the outside world. Tucker believes there's more to SYLO's story. He was on the sidelines when the high school running back dropped dead with no warning. He saw the bizarre midnight explosion over the ocean, and the mysterious singing aircraft that travel like shadows through the night sky. He tasted the Ruby--and experienced the powers it gave him--for himself. What all this means, SYLO isn't saying. Only Tucker holds the clues that can solve this deadly mystery. Look to the sky because Pemberwick Island is only the first stop."--Dust jacket.… (mehr)

FROM AMAZON: They came from the sky parachuting out of military helicopters to invade Tucker Pierce's idyllic hometown on Pemberwick Island, Maine.

They call themselves SYLO and they are a secret branch of the U.S. Navy. SYLO's commander, Captain Granger, informs Pemberwick residents that the island has been hit by a lethal virus and must be quarantined. Now Pemberwick is cut off from the outside world.

Tucker believes there’s more to SYLO’s story. He was on the sidelines when the high school running back dropped dead with no warning. He saw the bizarre midnight explosion over the ocean, and the mysterious singing aircraft that travel like shadows through the night sky. He tasted the Ruby - and experienced the powers it gave him - for himself.

What all this means, SYLO isn’t saying. Only Tucker holds the clues that can solve this deadly mystery.

I expected a fun, cheesey page-turner, but this was a slog. It felt like the author was over explaining the story instead of bringing it to life. ( )

Middlegrade/teen fiction (there are several deaths and a mysterious, dangerous drug); conspiracy/sci-fi adventure (series). I'd not read Pendragon or any other of McHale's stuff, and don't know what I was expecting, but this was not it. The football talk in the beginning didn't help in my case (I can follow it fine, but didn't find it interesting) and pretty much felt the whole time that if the island peoples' cooperation was what our supposed arch-villain were after, there were much better ways to do it. I'd have abandoned it early on, but decided to plow through, figuring it would be a quicker read (not quick enough, as it turned out) and could count it towards my summer reading tally (now at 20). This might do okay with boys that like sports and improbable adventures, but there are way better books out there to recommend. ( )

I must admit, I was quite enthralled by this book. I stayed up way too late on two consecutive work nights reading it. I liked the characters and the location of Pemberwick Island. I so wanted to know what was going on and just exactly what SYLO was up to. I just couldn't put the book down. MacHale's story is very fast paced and the hits just keep coming. I'm ready for the next book in the series. ( )

government, freedom of information and freedom of citizens

What kind of power should the government have to take away freedom in the name of protecting people?
