I adored this book. Basically, Lemoncello has invented some of the best games-- print and computer-- in this world. Now, he's donated the money to create a new library with all kinds of exciting bells and whistles in his hometown, which destroyed their public library 10 years ago in favor of a car park. To celebrate its opening, he sponsors a Willy Wonka-esque lockin for 12 twelve-year-olds the night before the opening... but there turns out to be a game-esque twist.

Fans of libraries, books, and games of all kinds will find their interests touched on here. The amazing gaming room. The 'world's most famous librarian.' The interactive exhibits, holograms, and displays. Everything, including a generous donor and endowment, that a young adult librarian could want. And a devotion to gaming, and to the culture of playing games, including good sportsmanship. This is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with several rather cunning twists, a good reading list, and a lot of clues.

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library is a wonderful book for middle grade readers about a boy named Kyle Keeley who participates in a contest in a new, spectacular library that has just been built in his hometown. Kyle, who is not really a reader, becomes team captain for a group of his friends who are also participating. Kyle learns lots about books, friendship, libraries, and himself. The library where the game is played sounds like a fantastic place where I would love to go to find books. The mystery of the game and the chase for answers make this a real page turner that kept my attention until the very end. I'm anxious for the sequel, Mr. Lemoncello's Library Olympics. ( )

A fun, quick read, definitely more for "nerdier" kids than reluctant readers. While the characters are 12, they read a little younger, and Colin is an obvious villain, but they're all fairly likable to read. I do find it a little hard to believe, however, that twelve-year olds would be so interested and knowledgeable in the Dewey Decimal system, but the book does a good job teaching without being patronizing. This was a fun book. I could see 4th and 5th graders enjoying the story, but I would think they'd need to be a little older to get all the literary references. ( )

The public library in Kyle's hometown is reopening following extensive renovations, and he and several of his friends have somehow been lucky enough to win an essay contest granting them an overnight sneak preview before the official grand opening. They are wowed by the cutting-edge, interactive technology, games, books and imaginative architecture. The following morning, just as they think they're about to go home, they learn their adventure has only just begun: hidden throughout the building are clues which lead to the library's secret exit — and they have 24 hours to locate it.

I selected this to fulfill 'a middle grade mystery' in the Read Harder challenge, mostly because my daughter had just read it and thought it was great. It was a pretty fun, silly read, perfect for 4th/5th graders, and as a library user and employee myself I'm going to give it extra points for a) library setting, b) incorporating real library classification into the puzzles, and c) including an automated materials handling system.
