Biography & Autobiography. Essays. Family & Relationships. Nonfiction. HTML:

Elinor Lipman has populated her fictional universe with characters so utterly real that we feel like they're old friends. Now she shares an even more intimate world with usâ??her ownâ??in essays that offer a candid, charming take on modern life. Looking back and forging ahead, she considers the subjects that matter most: childhood and condiments, long marriage and solo living, career and politics. Here you'll find the lighthearted: a celebration of four decades of All My Children, a reflection on being Jewish in heavily Irish-Catholic Lowell on St. Patrick's Day, a hilariously unflinching account of her tiptoe into online dating. But she also tackles the serious and profound in eloquent stories of unexpected widowhood and caring for elderly parents that use her struggles to illuminate ours… (mehr)

I have a bad habit of reading novelist's essay collections and/or memoirs before reading their novels, which sometimes unfortunately puts me off moving on to their better known books (see Ann Patchett). In this case, however, it worked out well. I listened to I Can't Complain on CD (read by the author), and tremendously enjoyed having Elinor Lipman's company in my car through the various stages of her life that these essays cover. I laughed and I cried, and really, I don't ask for much more from reading/listening than that. Now, on to her fiction! ( )

This was a very quick read; a collection of short essays and articles, mostly previously published, but none of which I had read before. Inevitably I enjoyed some more than others; I liked the "predictors of compatibility" listed in "Boy Meets Girl" very much, and the chapter about losing her husband was moving.

I do disagree about the movie version of "Then She Found Me" though - I loved the book and Dwight Willamee was the best thing about it. ( )

I have been a fan of Elinor Lipman since hearing her speak at a librarian's conference about 15 years ago. Her memoirs are funny and gut-wrenching and make you feel like she could be your own friend or sister. ( )

Witty, interesting and well-written. It's so much fun to read the thoughts of one of my favorite authors. And though, from the surface, it looks like I have nothing in common with her, it was amazing how many times I found myself thinking, "Yes, exactly!" Wonderful book. ( )

Delightful audio read by Lipman herself----and it's exactly what you would expect from her---straightforward, funny, endearing. ( )
