In 1866 on the empty Kansas prairie, two children shared a few desperate moments that changed their lives. For years afterward, each nursed a secret dream - that the other had grown into a special person - brave, good, kind. When Norah Hawkins and Caleb Sutton cross paths again, dreams die. She is a bitter, suicidal widow. He is a gunman with little conscience and few scruples. Alternately angry, repelled, and attracted, the two form an uneasy partnership to hold land she owns and he covets against a marauding neighbor. Their bargain never included love, or did it?… (mehr)

Sitting down with one of Ellen O'Connell's western romances is like spending an afternoon wrapped in a blanket watching my favorite movie next to the fire. I get so absorbed in the character and their lives that it feels like I'm right there in the story with them.

Cal and Norah met for a brief and stressful time many years ago when they were both teens. The events left a permanent mark on both of their lives and when their paths cross again years later, their lives had changed in ways they never imagined. Norah is widowed and fighting a range war to keep her farm and Cal is moved to help her out of gratitude for what she did for him all those years ago.

I wasn't sure I'd like Cal at first. He's a rough around the edges kind of hero with bad habits and a cynical outlook. Norah is beaten down by life and grieving her losses. The couple agrees to a partnership to make the farm profitable and keep it out of the hands of greedy Mr. Van Cleve. Together they knock off each other's rough edges and love blooms. By the end of the story I was firmly in their court, rooting them on. I barely put it down and enjoyed it very much.

Ellen O'Connell has done it again - this is the second of her books I've read and she is single-handedly getting me into western historical fiction. I've tried reading westerns before and have never fallen in love with anything, but I am really enjoying her books. I first read Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold and greatly enjoyed that (even more so the second time around) and between that and this one, I have a hard time deciding which I like better.

O'Connell's novels are strong, character-driven books, which I love. Norah and Caleb are both well developed and fully fleshed out characters and I enjoyed every moment I spent with them. Many of the secondary characters also had multiple layers to their personalities which makes them all the more human. O'Connell has a gift for creating characters that are incredibly true to life. I can't wait to read the rest of her books. ( )

Our heroine Norah Hawkins has lost her wooden framed home, her crops, her husband and just about everything else stollen from her. All this at the hand of the rich demon Mr. Van Cleve. He wants all of the land he can get his hands on esp. her land along the creek. He of course does not get his own hands dirty but sends his gun men to do his work. One of these men is soon to be the hero of our story.

Caleb Sutton, remembers Norah from a childhood rescue. He owes her. It isn't too long before they are helping each other, a little at a time to find a better life and also to put Van Cleve into a better place.

The character development, the many conflicts and climax, and the story premise all add up to make one very interesting read. Each of Ms. O'Connell's books is better than the last and each one is fantastic.

A memorable book. ( )
