Ray Bradbury's Dinosaur Tales is an uneven collection of short stories and poems, with A Sound of Thunder and The Fog Horn clearly the best of the bunch. Nicely illustrated by a fine group, particularly that of William Stout and Steranko, coincidentally the illustrators of the two aforementioned stories. Bradbury's entertaining introduction explains his lifelong infatuation with dinosaurs and provides some interesting background information on the stories. ( ) Even though Ray Bradbury is, in my opinion, the best short story writer in the history, and he consents to a life-long idolization of dinosaurs, this anthology of his all dinosaur stories and poems doesn't strike anywhere near his usual excellence. We do have the quintessential "A Sound of Thunder", and "The Fog Horn", which are from the better part of Bradbury's stories, but the likes of "Besides a Dinosaur, Whatta Ya Wanna Be When You Grow Up" are just below par. And let's face it, he is just not a poet. :) The last story, "Tyrannosaurus Rex", falls somewhere in the middle. The illustrations, though, are excellent. The magnificently accompany the tales, and make their reading a more joyous experience. I would definitely recommend reading this collection once, just for the illustrations.
